With the light source behind the mermaid should it be in silhouette? With the shawl if you mask just the bit under the arm and change the opacity a little you'll get some of the background coming through. Just an idea.

Tubby, not everybody has Adobe Photoshop, some use other software that may not have the same features.

Thanks for the tips, Tubby. I don't have Photoshop, I use Corel Paintshop Pro 7, and very slowly learning on PSP 2018.

For example, in this mermaid image, with some area selection, it would eliminate the grey shades on the left side of the skulls with very little effort, and result in a smooth transition between the edge of the skulls and the background.

Not necessarily for this artwork but for some of your others, it would result in much smoother transitions between your layers. There are many tutorials on it. That feature is a godsend for many techniques.

You commented on my image and saw something I missed, and correcting it resulted in a better image, so I feel I should do the same...Having reviewed your portfolio, a feature of photoshop I think you would find incredibly useful is the "Blend if" feature.

It's not easy to blend a painting and a photo together.

I wanted the background to be soft, so she stands out more. And I didn't miss masking, that's part of her shawl.
