contests

The contests - Common Rules

  • A new contest is launched every day at 3:00 PM GMT+1 and will last for 72hrs.
  • All contests are open to every active member of Photoshopnation.com
  • An entry fee is paid to enter a contest (except for the Time Attack), this fee is paid for with Photoshopnation's internal currency
  • A contest can be entered also by spending a token.
  • Default entry fee for all daily contests is 20 photocoins, with the following exceptions:
  • Time Attack contests have no entrance fee.
  • Themed contests (Photoshop and Photography) require an entrance fee of 40 photocoins. A token may not be used to enter this type of contests.
  • Contests are open for upload 24hrs prior to start time, the contest source image is also released at this time.
  • Time Attack contests' source image and upload is released at the moment the contest is scheduled to start.
  • For Theme and Photography contest no source image to work with is provided, instead a reference image will be provided.
  • Source images and contest upload can be 'unlocked' prior to the natural date. Click on "unlock" in the Contests calendar page.
  • Once an image is submitted to a contest, members can vote and comment on it from the start until the contest comes to an end.
  • Users can enter up to two entries each per contest, paying one entry fee per entry, or by spending a token (see Entering a contest and Tokens).
  • Posting an entry is possible until the end of a contest.
  • Each and every entry uploaded to any contest has to be the original work of the user posting it, and exclusive to Photoshopnation, meaning users can't upload entries which contain, even partially, works they have done in the past on other websites or in other competitions whether it was online or not. Infringement of these requirement could lead to a disqualification of the entry and/or a banning of the user from the community.
  • Combined fees (photocoins and token values) in a contest contribute to that contests' “bounty”.
  • The entry with the highest Score wins the contest. In the case of a tie, the entry that has been uploaded before wins. The same method is applied to ties for second and third places. The winner of a contest also receives a badge, or award, peculiar to that type of contest (e.g.: “Theme contest” badge, “Anonymous” badge, etc.) (see Winning and Rewards).

Entering a contest

  • Every user can enter up to two different entries for each daily contest available on the website.
  • Only registered users can enter contests. The user must not be banned or suspended.
  • Must have the minimum amount of photocoins to pay for the entry fee, or has a token, one for each entry.
  • In any case an entry that has been entered into a contest can not be retracted. Any particular case will be decided on by the management/moderators.
  • Max image dimensions/size for all contests are as follows: 1920 pixels wide x 1920 pixels high x 1.5 Megabytes. Allowed file types are: .jpeg, .png or .gif. Animated gifs have a max width/height restriction of 760 pixels.
  • The period in which posting to a contest is allowed has not yet expired.
  • The user can decide at any moment to modify his/her entry, in the pursuit of improving it.

Entry rules

  • All entries have to follow this set of rules to be eligible to compete to win a prize. Failure to comply to one or more of these rules will put the entry under the scrutiny of the management/moderators, who in turn can decide to “pull” the image from the contest. It could also be that the author is given the chance to update his/her entry to adhere to the guidelines. A severe case of infringement or  repeat offences could also lead to a ban or a suspension of the author. The author who has a “pulled” image is not entitled to a refund of the fee paid to enter the contest, wheter it was photocoins or a token, nor any other amount paid to unlock that contest.
  • Has to follow the contest's guidelines and/or theme.
  • Can not in any case include: elements of pornography, elements deemed inappropriate to common moral sense (glorification of acts of violence, terrorism, abuse etc.), elements offensive and derogatory to people's cultural heritage or religion. Racism is also not tolerated.
  • Can not in any case include copyrighted material which you don't own or don't have permission to use.
  • In the case of Regular, Time Attack, Anonymous and Bounty contests has to clearly be a photomanipulated image that includes the given source picture in any way the user sees fit. The use of any image manipulation software is allowed.
  • Has to be the original work of the user and cannot include other users' or other artists' work without permission from the latter.

Winning, placing and rewards

  • Every time a contest ends a bounty share (made up of photocoins) and a single prize for the winner (not splittable, see below for the prize type for each contest) is awarded.
  • Time Attack contests award only a Token to the author of  first placed entry. This prize is not splittable in the event of a tie. Second and Third place receive respectively 30 and 20 Bottlecaps
  • At the end of any other type of contest the bounty share is split between the authors of the first three placed entries, like so: 39% to the winner, 24% to the runner up,  10% to the third place, 9% to the next weekly jackpot (Bounty contest), 3% to the yearly jackpot (Head to Head Tournament), 15% towards the website's maintenance costs. In the rare event of a tie the tied entries' authors will split the prize for that place.
In the event that any of the first three places do not reach the minimum prize of 20 Photocoins, a Token will be awarded instead.
Fourth and Fifth place receive respectively 30 and 20 Bottlecaps (except in Time Attack contests, see below).
  • Author of the first placed entry gets a badge for the win (not splittable).
  • In any type of contest the authors of first five placed entries will also receive:
  • A fixed amount of experience points, regardless of ties, as follows: 1st place = 15 pts, 2nd place = 7 pts, 3rd place = 4 pts.
  • Furthermore a variable amount of experience points based on the number of opponents the author had to face in the given contest.
  • A fixed bonus of Honour points, regardless of ties, as follows: 1st place = 5 pts, 2nd place = 4 pts, 3rd place = 3 pts.
  • An experience bonus based on one's voting results, 1 experience point each Fair vote (See Scoring and Final standing calculations below).
  • A Honour bonus/malus depending on one's voting results (See Scoring and Final standing calculations below).

Scoring and Final standing calculations

At the moment a contest is closed a winner is determined: the entry with the highest final score wins, other entries follow in a descending order by score. Number of votes is not a key factor in the determination of the final standing but is quite important in calculating each entry's final score.
Let's see how the final score for each entry is determined:
  • An average of points assigned by voters with each vote on a given is calculated determining the entry's score (Sum of all points assigned / # of votes).
  • Each entry has its own Score ratio which is multiplied by the entry's score to determine the Final score.
  • The Score ratio can go from 0.0 to 1.0 and is calculated by comparing an entry's number of votes to the contest's votes average per entry (Total votes cast in the contest / Number of entries in that contest with at least 1 vote). If your entry has a number of votes that is at least 75% of the contest's vote average your ratio could reach 1.0. The Score ratio is also affected by how many votes you cast in the relative contest: whenever you participate in a contest a "Vote progress counter" will appear in that contest's page, showing how many votes you should be casting to reach full ratio. Failure to cast this minimum amount of votes will result in a penalty to the entry's ratio of 0.1.
  • Each entry can have a Honour penalty ratio which negatively affects the entry's score ratio, preventing it from reaching the full 1.0 (See Honour).
  • So, basically, Final score = Points average * (Score ratio - Honour penalty).
  • The Score ratio of any given entry can change during the course of a contest, depending on the voting pattern. In turn, the Honour penalty can change only if the entry's author gains enough Honour to render it null by voting fairly in recently closed contests.
